About the Sampler

The leading hub for the UK new music scene

The Sampler brings together the extraordinary new music activity happening across the UK. From DIY nights for emerging composers, to livestreamed festivals from front rooms, to workshops, sound installations and experimental club nights.

Due to recent developments following the ongoing Covid-19 oubreak and the impact it has had on the artist and music scene—in the UK and globally—we are making a huge effort to support and accommodate the changes in practice and the new challenges composers and musicians are facing today, and for the foreseeable future.

We are hosting regular online zoom calls, to explore specific issues or host open spaces for discussion; we are signposting people to help support your music and to services composers are able to provide. We will run open calls to explore relevant topics, and keep working hard on our artist development programmes to best support artists like we always have.

With The Sampler, we aim to transform this platform as a space to highlight and feature artistic activity in all the ways it manifests itself in the new normal of Covid-19. We will feature livestreams, online eventsworkshops, live broadcasts, podcasts, editorials and blogposts. We want to make accessing information about online events easier than ever, all under one roof. This will be a gradual process, and we are open to your feedback — if you have clear ideas about how to improve our offer, we want to hear from you.

And the time will come when we see each other again, in the post-Covid-19 new normal, in small or big venues with artists new or old, relishing not just in the wonderful new sounds that never ceased being created, but in that lingering mutual understanding that these sounds and music bring us together in many ways more than we imagined in the old normal—and that to make music is to partake in community, and to celebrate being alive and free to do so as well.

The Sampler’s purpose is simple and continues unchanged: to support this changing ecosystem and help people discover it. If you’ve got a project, event, collaboration involving new music in the UK, The Sampler is here to celebrate and promote it.

Alongside events listings, we also feature interviews and features about composers, collectives and scenes across the country, as well as recommendations from artists and creators – we celebrate new music in all of its forms.

The Sampler is driven by those who use it and hosted by a team of experts from Sound and Music – the national charity for new music.
