Bastard Assignments are Timothy Cape, Edward Henderson, Caitlin Rowley and Josh Spear, a collective of composer-performers who curate events mainly in south London, as well as showing work across the UK and Europe. Since 2016 we have developed a shared creative practice, making work collaboratively as composers and performers. In 2018, we have performed in Chicago with Mocrep and recorded a session for BBC Radio 3’s Late Junction which aired in May. Highlights of 2017 included performing at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, Royal Academy of Arts, Brighton Fringe and live on BBC Radio 3’s Hear and Now show. Bastard Assignments has performed at LCMF, Weisslich, in Copenhagen and Århus with AUT, Frontiers Festival in Birmingham, Tête à Tête: The Opera Festival, London Topophobia, on Resonance FM and headlined Nonclassical’s clubnight twice. Our September 2016 performance at Southbank Centre was broadcast live on BBC Radio 3’s Hear and Now programme. Work made by our composers has also recently been performed by ensembles including Plus-Minus Ensemble, An Assembly, Ensemble Garage at the International Festival for New Music – Bucharest and Decoder Ensemble at Elbfilharmonie in Hamburg. Our 2017-18 activities are supported by Arts Council England and PRS for Music Foundation, and we are a resident ensemble on Snape Maltings’ Open Space residency programme for 2017-19. Previous seasons have also been supported by Arts Council England (Fresh & Clean series, 2015, and NEW TEETH series, 2016-17, as well as individual shows in Peckham) and PRS for Music Foundation (2016-17). In 2016 we received a British Council Artists’ International Development Grant for performances in Berlin and Munich. Earlier events have received funding from the Sound and Music Composer Curator scheme (S/M/L series, 2014). We have been featured in articles and profiles in the Guardian, the Telegraph and The Wire magazine, and been reviewed in The Spectator, the Quietus and the Evening Standard.
