AN EAR TO THE PLANTS: A WORKSHOP WITH ACTION PYRAMID

MUSIC AND OTHER LIVING CREATURES X ENCOUNTERS: AN EAR TO THE PLANTS: A WORKSHOP WITH ACTION PYRAMID

Led by sound artist Action Pyramid (Tom Fisher), whose recent work has focused on the surprising and understudied sonic world of aquatic plant photosynthesis, this informal session will look to examine and appreciate these complex sound types, as well as a chance to interpret them through modes of mimicry and play.

No musical or singing skills are needed. Attendees are welcome to bring an instrument of choice if they wish.

ACTION PYRAMID

Working under the name Action Pyramid, Tom Fisher’s projects vary from site-specific sound installation and headphone based works for galleries and museums, to experimental sound works, radio and music. Utilising a multitude of recording techniques, often aimed at exploring and re-interpreting the seemingly unnoticed and unheard elements of our surroundings, he looks to present compositional and spatial expressions of these phenomena in a way that attempts to offer up alternative perspectives regarding perceptions of scale, hierarchical bias and the interconnectedness of living things. He has performed and exhibited his work internationally and attended residencies in Iceland and the Finish arctic.

Music and Other Living Creatures is a series at Cafe OTO (curated by OTO Projects) dedicated to music about, with, or by other living creatures. Birds, tigers, chickens, insects and many other living creatures are explored through sound-walks, listening sessions, commissioned performances, live responses and discussions.

EnCOUnTERs is a series of inter-disciplinary events that reside at the intersection between inter- and intra-species encounter and the sonic imagination. Events direct attention to curiosity, the speculative as well as the scientific, and to notions of multiplicity of being, experience and philosophy surveying creative and research-based practices that reference aspects of ecology, ethology and other creature-ologies, bioart and bioacoustics, sound/scape studies, zoömusicology, ethnobotany, critical plant studies, and related fields.

EnCOUnTERs is curated by Helen Frosi (SoundFjord).
