Berio Sequenza Series

This year’s London Ear Festival features a retrospective look at the music of Luciano Berio, including performances of several of his Sequenzas for solo instruments.

Thursday 22 March: Sequenza III
Our Berio retrospective begins with soprano Laura Monaghan performing Berio’s Sequenza III, a work which explores the voice beyond conventional singing through a huge range of captivating vocal gestures and techniques.

Friday 23 March: Sequenza I
The amazing flautist Roberto Fabbriciani continues our Sequenza series with Sequenza I, one of the most important work for flute in contemporary repertoire.

Saturday 24 March: Sequenza VI
Violist Tomoko Akasaka – a regular collaborator with Helmut Lachenmann and Toshio Hosokawa – continues our Sequenza series with Sequenza VI, an etude focusing on harmonic sequences and how they repeat, develop and transform.

Sunday 25 March: Sequenza IV
Rounding off our sequenza series, British pianist and composer Jonathan Powell performs Sequenza IV, a work for solo piano which Berio describes as “a restless piece of music…[where] chords change constantly [and] tremolo-like passages flash by.
