Eliza McCarthy & Jo Wills: Among Red Mountains
Leading contemporary pianist, Eliza McCarthy, plunges into the natural world in this beguiling sequence of works for piano, analogue, amplified and prepared. Berio’s playful miniatures are contrasted with Mica Levi’s powerfully pure statements, while the three monumental works of John Luther Adams provide the sonic structure of the evening.
In the second half, Eliza and Jo Wills perform their own work, Breath Box, of which she writes: ‘From the peninsula of Brean Down in Somerset, to a small sunlit room in the city, Breath Box represents the expanse and intimacy of familiar and favourite places. Developed during a residency at Snape Maltings, the prerecorded material in Breath Box was made from manipulating the rich palette of sonic possibilities that lurk beneath the piano lid.’
