Music & Place: Belonging with NW LIve Arts

NW Live Arts perform a fantastic melee of different types of music from different cultures interlaced with poetry readings exploring the meaning of ‘belonging’, as part of Bloomsbury Festival 2021

Attab Haddad – oud
Christina McMaster – piano
Antonio Romero – percussion
Toby Carr – lute, theorbo and Baroque guitar

While the musicians trace the history of the relationship between oud and lute, reimagine Bach, Satie and Ligeti in diverse ways and the whole ensemble sweeps us aways with jazz and improvisation, we consider in what kind of music an instrument belongs and how it can be transposed in a dialogue between cultures and genres. At the same time poets from Holborn Community Association and STAR students from Birkbeck University in dialogue with the musicians, bring us powerful and beautiful writing stimulated by the thought of ‘belonging’. NW Live Arts are working with writer, John Simmons from Bloomsbury based writing group 26 who has led and facilitated the creative writing workshops in preparation for this concert.

The concert will also be live streamed for those that cannot join the in-person audience.
