Eroteme welcomes Pak Yan Lau & Darin Gray for a night of free improvisation with electroacoustic experimentation. First in duo form and then joined as a quartet with sound-artist Lee Patterson & percussionist Charlie Collins. Expect complex architectures, insistent rhythms, amplified objects, barely hinted melodies & electronic effects.
Pak Yan Lau, born in Belgium, with roots from Hong Kong and now based in Brussels is a sound artist, improviser, musician and composer, who has developed over the years a rich, dense and captivating sound universe from prepared pianos, toy pianos, synths, electronics and various sound objects. Skilfully blending electro-acoustic approaches, she explores sound in a bewitching way, merging different sound sources with poetry, magic and finesse.
Darin Gray is known as a solo artist, tireless collaborator, session bassist, improviser, composer, educator, Jim O’Rourke’s go-to bassist for over 25 years, as half of the long standing duo On Fillmore (with Glenn Kotche of Wilco), as the touring bassist for TWEEDY (2014-2019), as a member of Akira Sakata & Chikamorachi, and as the bassist for Grand Ulena, Dazzling Killmen, You Fantastic!, and Brise-Glace.
Lee Patterson has devised and performs with a selection of amplified devices and processes. Whether working live with amplification or recording within an environment, he has pioneered a range of methods to produce or uncover complex sound in unexpected places. From rock chalk and springs, to aquatic plants and insects, Lee eavesdrops upon and takes inspiration from places and situations otherwise considered mute.
Charlie Collins is a creative percussionist, free polyrhythmic drummer, and sound artist, based in Sheffield, UK. His performances explore the boundary between pure sound and rhythm, frequently incorporating metal percussion and/or freely associative drumming. Early recordings for cult labels Industrial, Fetish and Doublevision were soon followed by collaborations with many of the pioneers of free improvisation, while his interest in East Asian percussion and rhythm technique is displayed in his current work with komungo player Eun-Jung Kim, pianist Yoko Miura, and visual artist Bongsu Park. He is one of a handful of musicians to have played both Derek Bailey’s Company Week and Top Of The Pops.
