The River Speaks (Ian Rawes) | Confluence: The River Speaks

Field recordist, Ian Rawes, respected for his long-term project, The London Sound Survey, will lead a field-recording session along the River Wandle. Ian has documented the river since 2001, with his recordings compiled into “The Waterways Sound Map” in 2011. The sound map has received over half a million views and has been featured in the National Press. It has also inspired other projects, such as Rob St John’s “Water of Life”. Ian will bring his experience and historical knowledge (industrial and cultural), to inspire and provoke questions.

Ian’s session will take the form of a river-long walk and recording session (sound and photography) where participants are encouraged to look and listen out for hidden histories whilst considering the links between sound and image. Participants are encouraged to share their own experiences of the River Wandle with the group, and there will be time for quiet reflection and sound recording in situ.

The walk begins at Earlsfield (tube/train station) and ends at Morden Hall Park (not far from Morden Tube).

Free to attend: Booking via: helenfrosi[at]mac.com

PLEASE NOTE: The walk will be of particular interest to locals and/or those interested in local history (of the Wandle). The walk is approximately 5 miles. Participants should bring a portable sound recorder with them and a camera (or smart phone with camera) where possible.
