Zubin Kanga with Shiva Feshareki – Cyborg Soloists
For this special Sound Unwrapped performance, renowned composer & turntablist Shiva Feshareki joins Zubin in a virtuosic duo performance in which a whirlwind of piano sound is combined with Feshareki’s turntables and electronics swirling around the audience via a multi-speaker array.
Pianist, composer and technologist Zubin Kanga launches a new album featuring new works which use innovative technologies to swirl, melt and morph the sounds of the piano, with digital instruments, motion sensors, AI-generated sounds and interactive video.
Laura Bowler’s SHOW(ti)ME contrasts the public persona of the professional musician with their private anxieties and obsessions, in a work combining MiMU sensor gloves, live video and social media avatars. Emily Howard envelops the piano in swirls of sound generated through a machine learning neural network, structuring the piece around the EEG brain patterns of listeners responding to Kanga’s piano recordings. Oliver Leith combines the cutting edge TouchKeys keyboard with classic synthesizers, making these analogue sounds melt and slide, while Laurence Osborn continues his series of works pushing the limits of virtuosity between piano and keyboards. Zubin Kanga uses a motion sensor to sculpt both piano and synthesizer sounds in the air. And Shiva Feshareki joins Zubin in a virtuosic duo performance in which a whirlwind of piano sound is combined with Feshareki’s turntables and electronics swirling around the audience via a multi-speaker array.
All the works have been created as part of Zubin Kanga’s 4-year artistic research project, Cyborg Soloists, facilitating collaborations between leading musicians, researchers and industry partners, creating new works that integrate cutting-edge technologies.
