Who says July is quiet for experimental new music? We’ve scoured the listings for the upcoming month, and are happy to serve you up some highly subjective recommendations, spanning avant garde mavericks, contemporary choral music, and sonic ecosystems.

This month’s were chosen by Sound and Music’s very own Alex Noble.

  1. DAYLIGHT MUSIC 312: SPACE IN THIS PLACE – GOLDSMITHS  – London // 06.07.19

This caught my eye, as the Goldsmiths music department has a great reputation. Here they celebrate the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, with an afternoon of experimental music-making at Union Chapel. The wide-ranging programme of works from across the university’s distinctive musical history looks set to offer a fascinating and engaging event. Music from: Christian Wolff, Iris Garrelfs, Lily Greenham and more.

  1. BLOW YOUR TRUMPETS: ARISE, ARISE  – London // 04.07.19

Next up, a whole host of performances by Chandos Chamber Choir, including world premieres of new work, can be found at Blow Your Trumpets: Arise, Arise – one of the summer concerts hosted at St Pancras Church. A particular highlight should be Laura Snowdon’s choral setting of the poem Evensong by Cherry Smyth, as part of the Adopt-a-Composer scheme. Other pieces include work by: Hildegard Von Bingen, Carlotta Ferrari and Roxanna Panufnik.

  1. CORPORA ALIENA – London // 13.07.19

Another exciting opportunity comes in the form of Russian artists Pavel and Elvira Zhagun, whose rare trip from Moscow to the UK will see them perform Digitalizm, a composition that uses a custom-made generative computer programmes. The range of international musicians joining them on the line-up sound fascinating, and impressively reflect Corpora Aliena’s commitment to diversity within their scene.

  1. THE VOICE PROJECT’S NEW WORK AT HOUGHTON HALL – King’s Lynn // 06.07.19

The principle of the highly-regarded and award-winning choir // vocal group The Voice Project really intrigued me. They are a totally open access organisation and anyone can join, whether they have any experience of singing or not. Despite this, their standard is incredibly high – so this premier of a new site-specific work at Houghton Hall, King’s Lynn, should be a great experience.

  1. TIPPING POINT – Bridport // 06.07.19

This free day of talks and performances, explores the impact of environmental change on Dorset ecosystems through sound. Combining the technical specialism of electroacoustics, with the unifying immediacy of environmental crises, it looks set to be very engaging.
